How many exhibitions have you been to in the last year?  How many stands really made an impression on you? How many can you actually remember?  Honestly? And if what you remember are the custom built, big-budget constructions, perhaps you feel that on your budget you are unlikely to ever make that kind of impact. Absolutely not true.

“No great thing is created suddenly.” Epictetus. As I am contacting clients who are mounting exhibitions this Spring, this quote is at the forefront of my mind.

I tend to talk a great deal about creativity because I believe it is vitally important to every aspect of life. In our society, we are encouraged to think of creativity as the domain of 'artists', rather than the lifeblood of commerce, science, and just about everything else.

In business, we need to embrace creativity as a tool rather than pay lip service to the idea. And for many business people that can be a little challenging.

As we work towards the exhibition season this year, I want to be reminded of the basics... putting on a great show takes time, thought and meticulous planning and attention to detail. To make the most of the investment companies put into their annual shows, preparation time, the creative time is essential.

At the last exhibition I visited, which was a business-to-business event, the only stand that made any impression at all, (and believe me when I say I really wanted to be impressed and inspired), consisted of nothing more complicated than a series of beautifully designed, immaculately printed and perfectly lit pop-up banner stands decorated with a curtain made up of origami pieces in the shape of the company logo - a bird. 

A really simple, elegant and inexpensive idea, that really helped the company stand out.
