Our Magnetic Secondary Double Glazing Kits have been developed with materials we use every day for signage and display. One of the simplest and quickest ways to secondary glaze your existing windows without planning permission or expense.

We understand that your home and windows will match its aesthetic, age, and setting, but as Winter and the colder months of the year draw in, you may be faced with a dilemma. You want to keep their stylish appearance, but in winter they may be cold, drafty, and covered in condensation, with the ledges looking worse for wear, or even needing a daily condensation vacuum.

We can produce an easy-to-remove magnetic secondary glazing system that works seamlessly with your existing windows, bringing them up to modern insulation standards with an easy DIY solution. These Magnetic Secondary Glazing Panels seal in comfort, can reduce your heating bills, and improve your home's energy rating. These panels are approved for listed buildings and conservation areas.

We supply fully assembled with a foam-backed adhesive magnetic strip applied to the acrylic panel, and attached to this a magnetic self-adhesive strip that will attached to your fixing point. All you need to do is take off the protective linings and remove the release liner to expose the self-adhesive and press it into place. You can then easily remove the acrylic panels to clean the windows and window seal, leaving the magnetic stripping in place for easy re-application.

No tools or expertise are required, just follow our easy Measurement & Installation Guide below. Simply fill in your window measurements online and we will securely package and send your panels directly to your home on the best lead times possible.

WHAT IS SECONDARY GLAZING?

Secondary glazing works as an additional layer of glazing for your existing windows. If measured and fitted correctly, it will essentially form a double-glazed solution for your windows - that in turn helps with heat retention, sound reduction, and has been proven to eliminate condensation. Plastic secondary glazing (such as acrylic, perspex of flexible films) is a much more cost-effective alternative when you compare it to glass - and when you can cut it to any size or shape you need it to be - then installation should be a straightforward and safe process. We want to help tackle your rising energy bills, not add to them! Secondary glazing should always be fitted on the interior side of your window.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS SECONDARY GLAZING?

There are several reasons why DIY secondary glazing is a great investment. First of all, you don’t need to replace your existing window pane to add secondary glazing yourself. This saves the cost you would incur when adding a double-glazed glass window.

Again, if fitted and sealed correctly - secondary glazing will do a useful job of retaining indoor heat, protecting you from noise pollution, and also making your existing window access more secure. You’ll also find that secondary glazing does a good job of preventing indoor draughts that could cause a chill, and stop heat from escaping especially if you have older, single-pane, or wooden windows.

HOW MAGNETIC SECONDARY GLAZING WORKS AND ITS BENEFITS

The Magnetic Secondary Glazing Panels reduce heat loss through windows by trapping a parcel of air in the cavity between the two panes. The Acrylic panels can be fitted to most window types, including sliding sash windows.

As much as 15% of the heat in your home is lost due to drafts of cold air coming in through gaps in the window seal and around the windows. The powerful double magnets create a strong perimeter seal, whilst the clear-as-glass 5mm rigid acrylic does not impact your view, with near-perfect optical clarity.

We set up one of our employees with panels for an old wooden window in their home that looked out onto a country lane by the house. They testified that there was a massive reduction in noise pollution coming into the house from that road, almost halving their perceived volume of the noise coming into the property. The same employee also noticed an almost 100% elimination of condensation on the windows.

Our Secondary Glazing Panels are made of 5mm PET Acrylic. This material is clear, strong, fire resistant and UV-stable, meaning they do not yellow or discolour with age. Each panel will be sanded to remove any sharp edges, is lightweight, and can easily be lifted off, and 'parked' on top of an adjacent panel so you won't have a loose panel to worry about whilst the window is open.

All parts combined, this system is only 8mm thick. Adding this super thin and effective system to your windows is far cheaper than costly window replacements and is the perfect solution to tackling rising energy bills in your home, office, or business setting.

If you're also worried about keeping your beautiful period windows, live in a listed building or protected property, Secondary Glazing has been approved by Conservation Officers, where fitting double-glazing is prohibited by a protection order.

Our panels come with a standard white border to blend into your window frames neatly and discretely.

I LIVE IN A LISTED/PROTECTED BUILDING, CAN I USE THIS PRODUCT?

Because this type of secondary glazing does not require any planning permission it is an ideal solution for immediately tackling draughts and condensation in listed buildings. We also provide magnetic tape with a soft foam back so it can easily contour around slightly sloped or uneven windows and walls. It is also low-tack, meaning it should not chip or stick to your paintwork, though we do recommend being ultra-careful when it comes to removal.

We do not recommend Magnetic Secondary Glazing Panels for roof windows, skylights, or extremely tilted windows due to the elements that may impinge your safety if they fall.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS

Please check your existing window frame to see that you have at least 20mm of mounting surface available all the way around.

We do not recommend our magnetic plastic secondary glazing solution for sloping windows or ceiling/roof windows.

Magnetic Secondary Glazing For Sash Windows

CUSTOM CUT SECONDARY GLAZING TO FIT ALL WINDOWS

Measuring Guides - Sash Windows

Measuring up for our DIY secondary glazing is simple. Before you begin measuring, decide the layout you would like the magnetic panels to have. If you don't need to open the window, a single panel can be applied up to a maximum size of 1200mm in width or height. We will install 12.5mm magnetic tape on all four sides of the panel. If your window has an opening running vertically or horizontally, two or more panels will be needed. Round up your measurements to the closest 5mm increment.

SASH WINDOWS

Sash windows are sliding-opening windows generally associated with traditional architecture and design. They can be PVC (PET) or wooden.

The first thing to do is recognise the Staff Bead. this is the round-faced baton that runs all the way around the box frame and holds the two sliding sections in place. The Magnetic Secondary Glazing Panels will be attached to the Box Frame, outside and beyond the Staff Bead.

Measuring for 1 Panel:

  • Measure from the outside edge of the staff bead where it meets the edge of the box frame horizontally to the other side of the box frame and staff bead. Then add 25-30mm to this measurement (this will give you 12.5mm of clearance on either side for the magnetic tape). This will give you the width of your Magnetic Secondary Glazing Panel. Repeat this process to get the height, and remember to add the 25-30mm to this measurement as well.

Measuring for 2 Panels:

If you have a window opening running horizontally or vertically, 2 panels will allow you to open the window. However, a centre-meeting rail will need to be added in the mid-point to allow a perimeter seal to be created on all four sides of each panel.

  • Make sure your centre-meeting rail is wide enough to support 2 x 12.5mm strips of magnetic tape. Mark a midpoint on the centre-meeting rail of the lower sliding sash.
  • Measure from the top of your window (where the box frame meets the staff bead) to the marked midpoint. Then add 12.5-13mm to this. This will give you the height of the top panel.
  • Repeat this process, starting at the midpoint and measuring down to the edge of the box frame at the bottom of the window. Add 12.5-13mm to this measurement for the magnetic tape fixing. This will give you the height of the second panel.
  • For the width, repeat as before, measuring from edge to edge of the box frame, adding 25-30mm for the magnetic tape. This measurement can be used for both the top and bottom panels.
Magnetic Secondary Glazing For Casement/Hinged Windows

CUSTOM-CUT SECONDARY GLAZING TO FIT ALL WINDOWS

Measuring Guides - Casement Windows

Measuring up for our DIY secondary glazing is simple. Before you begin measuring, decide the layout you would like the magnetic panels to have. If you don't need to open the window, a single panel can be applied up to a maximum size of 1200mm in width or height. We will install 12.5mm magnetic tape on all four sides of the panel. If your window has an opening running vertically or horizontally, two or more panels will be needed. Round up your measurements to the closest 5mm increment.

CASEMENT WINDOWS

Casement windows are the oldest style of window in the UK and the most popular. A casement window is hinged at the side (unless it’s a top-hung window) and is usually fitted in single or double panels. This makes panels easier to handle and can be stored more easily during the summer months. Casement windows are available in PVC (the most popular), timber, or aluminium for a contemporary building.

Make sure before measuring that any opening hinges or handles are within the cavity. You do not want any opening mechanisms to sit proud of the cavity or your panels will not fit properly.

Measuring for 1 Panel:

  • Measure from the outside edge of the window frame horizontally to the other side. Add 25-30mm to this measurement (this will give you 12.5mm of clearance on either side for the magnetic tape). This will give you the width of your Magnetic Secondary Glazing Panel. Repeat this process to get the height, and remember to add the 25-30mm to this measurement as well.

Measuring for Multiple Panels:

If your Casement window is made up of multiple-sized windows, treat each as its own set of measurements. If two panels are going to be sharing a centre point, make sure this is wide enough for each panel to have its own 12.5mm magnetic tape strip.

  • Measure each panel space from the edge of the box frame to the other side to get your widths and heights. Then work out which sides need 12.5mm added to them to allow for the tape parameter..

GUIDE NOTES FOR DIY INSTALLATION

Easy Installation Guide

Our simple DIY secondary glazing is straightforward to fit. We have made it as easy and quick as possible, with no tools needed at all! You may however need a second pair of hands.

  • Make sure the area is clean and dry, making sure no residual condensation, dust or cobwebs are on your window or its frame. A nice clean surface will make self-adhesive tape stick better.
  • When your order arrives, you may be tempted to remove any protective cling on the acrylic, leave it there for the moment!
  • Do not separate the partner magnetic strips that are fitted to your panels. Exact alignment is essential when applying to the window frame. Straighten any that may have become dislodged during transit. Do not apply the frame strips on its own.
  • Before you remove the adhesive backing from the tape, hold the acrylic window panel up to your window so that it overlaps your window frame equally on each edge.
  • Using a pencil, draw or marker the corners where you want the acrylic panel to fit onto your window frame so you can clearly see the final installation area.
  • When you are ready, remove the protective film from the back of your acrylic panel, this will be the side that faces outside.
  • You can then remove the backing paper from the magnetic strips to expose the adhesive. Gently and only with light pressure push it into place on your window frame. If you are happy with its location and fit, you can then go back with firmer pressure to secure the secondary glazing.
  • If you make a mistake halfway through this procedure it is best to remove the panel completely and start again. The strips can be removed from the window–frame edge with a sharp tug as long as light pressure has been applied at the initial fixing.

PLEASE BE AWARE

  • Always fit your secondary glazing to your main window frame, not to the opening part of the window, and not the glass itself.

  • The adhesive is very strong and cures with time, but adhesion will vary depending on the surface underneath.

  • Both parts of the self-adhesive magnetic strip will be supplied already fitted to your acrylic panels. Do not remove the partner strip to apply separately!

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR GLAZING PANELS

Cleaning & Maintenance

Avoid Hot Spots in Direct Sunlight (South Facing Windows)

It is advisable to remove these panels during the summer months and store away safely. Store in either the original packaging, or in a soft clean cloth (old bed sheets are great!) in an upright position. Temperature in the cavity can rise to 50C which is not good for the Acrylic or the magnetic strip adhesive.

Prevent Magnet Fusion

From time to time go around and free off panels that are permanently in position. The power of the magnets continuously pulls the two surfaces together, meaning when you do finally come to remove them for the warmer months, they may be quite difficult to separate. Lift a corner, separate all round and you can replace straight away.

Magnet Polarity

At installation, each panel is unique to itself and the window frame. If any panel is removed, it must be replaced in the exact same original position.

Dust or Blemish Build Up

Clear Cast Acrylic is brighter than glass. We recommend a plastic cleaner and anti-static polish to clean to a bright shine. Of course do not use abrasive cleaners or scourers as this will mar the acrylic.

Condensation

Residual condensation may occur for a short time if your window frames were damp when the product was installed, especially if they are made of timber. Over a long period, moisture can be absorbed into the woodwork from outside due to gaps or damaged putties. It then becomes trapped in the cavity and has nowhere to go. This means condensation may reoccur for a period of weeks as your windows dry out, this is not a defect of the product.

Guarantee

If the above care is taken, and installation guidelines adhered to, there will be no degradation of the Clear Cast Acrylic itself due to UVA/UVB penetration, or any lessening of the magnetic attraction.
