Illuminated Lettering for His Church at the RAF Binbrook Guardroom

Three decades after it closed, the guardroom at the former RAF Binbrook site has reopened with two historical aviation paintings unveiled, as well as brand new set of illuminated lettering to beckon you inside.

His Church

His Church provide secure, ethical, sustainable, full transport and logistics, charitable solutions for surplus products including food (ambient, chilled and frozen), clothing and a diverse range of supplies. These are then redistributed through a network of over 3,000 charities, at home and abroad, to help vulnerable people in need.

Since 2007, His Church has operated from the site, acquiring Hangar 3, a 50,000 Square foot C-Type Aircraft Hangar, which is now the largest charitable operations and logistic centre of its type in Europe, according to the BBC. In 2019, His Church acquired ‘Brookenby Park House, one of the ‘H Blocks’, before also acquiring the former Station Headquarters Medical Centre and Guardroom in 2020.

Richard Humphrey, Director of Operations for His Church said: “Sadly, these magnificent historic buildings were dilapidated, through misuse and neglect when His Church acquired them. However, firstly the SHQ (opened October 2022) and now the Guardroom have been fully restored to – in the words of many distinguished guests – their former glories.” - Lincolnshire World Article

A Blend Of Tradition & Innovation

When it comes to creating an inviting and inspiring atmosphere, signage plays a crucial role. Recently, we had the privilege of working on a project for His Church at the RAF Binbrook Guardroom, where we crafted stunning illuminated letters that truly make a statement.

The RAF Binbrook Guardroom, a site steeped in history, required signage that would respect its heritage while providing a modern touch. His Church sought an illuminated lettering signage display that would not only be functional but also enhance the welcoming atmosphere of their space. We were tasked with creating individual letters that were both face and halo illuminated, offering a striking visual impact day and night.

Creating Illuminated Letters

To achieve the desired effect, we used the following materials and techniques:

1. Navy Blue Acrylic Faces: The faces of the letters were crafted from high-quality navy blue acrylic. This choice of colour was deliberate, reflecting the church's brand identity and ensuring the lettering stood out against the backdrop of the guardroom.

2. Halo Illumination: To create the halo effect, we used an opal polycarbonate backtray. This material is known for its durability and excellent light diffusion properties. We applied a translucent vinyl to the backtray, which allows the light to pass through and create a warm white halo around each letter. This soft illumination not only enhances readability but also adds an elegant touch to the overall appearance.

3. LED Technology: For the illumination, we utilised energy-efficient LED modules. LEDs are perfect for this application due to their long lifespan, low energy consumption, and the ability to provide consistent, bright illumination. The LEDs were carefully positioned within the backtray to ensure even lighting across the entire surface of the letters.

4. Durability and Weather Resistance: Given that the signage would be exposed to the elements, we ensured that all materials used were weather-resistant and robust. The acrylic and polycarbonate components, combined with the protective vinyl, ensure that the signage will remain vibrant and functional for years to come.
