Printed Aluminium Display for Groves Nurseries
THE CLIENT
In 1866, Charles William Groves started a small garden nursery in the Dorset village of Piddletrenthide. Now, some 150 years later, Grove Nurseries is one of the largest garden centres in the region and a mainstay in the Bridport community. Throughout the year, their nurseries alone are home to 32,000 bedding plants, 12,000 trees, 8,000 roses and 6,000 perennials.
The nurseries are now run by the SIXTH generation of the Groves family, Becky and Charlie, and it was Charlie who approached us about a fairly unique seasonal project.
THE BRIEF
This certainly wasn’t your typical brief, but something we were excited to be involved in.
As part of this year’s Santa’s Grotto, Groves Nurseries were looking for us to design and manufacture a game for children to play while they waited to meet Father Christmas. This would consist of a festive image being printed onto composite aluminium sheet, with several holes cut into it. Large enough so that ‘snowballs’ and, importantly, the children’s faces could fit through.
We were given free reign as far as the creative design process goes, but there was one suggestion from the Groves family: penguins.
THE SOLUTION
We created the Penguin-themed Snowball Target Practice game and it was a huge hit at the garden centre. Printed on the incredibly durable Aluminium Composite Material (often referred to as ACM), the hand-drawn cartoon penguins were visually appealing for both children and their parents, and the snowball game itself functioned perfectly. The holes were routed to the perfect size, cut big enough for the adults to get involved, too. Overall we were delighted with the finished product. Festive fun all round!
